It reads like a family scrapbook

They were born, they grew up. Their father made some nice deals on exercise equipment. They started to exercise in eighth grade, as a family tradition -- they played sports and then football, they got hurt. They had fun.

Although there are some interesting tidbits scattered throughout this book -- and I wish my mother had put a freezer full of food stocked for me and Sis when we were in the middle of our baseball practice/growth spurt years -- I found the book to be pleasantly anecdotal, but not inspirational. It's nice to know "how they did it" but it doesn't give much of a message other than -- this is a nice, solid family -- this is how they lived, grew up, played sports.

I bought this for my nephews birthday and he loved it. But it is definitely a book for children and not adults. I read a quote attributed to Wes Welker where he joked that he though it was written in crayon but it does seem like a rush job with not much time or effort put into it.

More of a Children's Book

I received this book from the Vine program and more than likely I would never have purchased the book. It seems more targeted fro children to read. The print though is large, the wording not that difficult and a fast and easy book to read in a short time. This is somewhat the "all American" story of a family that loved sports, that worked hard and overcame setbacks as they worked toward their goals. The book will give you a picture of how the family was raining the boys, how the family got by of a few hundred dollars a week for food when everyone was at home.

This is just a nice little personal book that gives the reader the "rest of the story" and is light and of little real substance. It is just a little fun reading away from those books that contains lot of drama and intrigue,. You won't find that in this book.. This book is not a breaking story worthy of a news clip, but rather a lazy , short, little story about one's family , their trials and tribulations. Read it only if you have nothing else to do for the moment.

Fernando Diz and Martin Whitman's Distress Investing is a practical tool to both beginner and experienced investors. Today's worldwide economic downturn has created attractive investments for distressed investors which makes this book a timely release. Distress Investing guides the reader step by step from defining distressed debt to valuation. Understanding creditor's rights and bankruptcy law allow distressed investors to capitalize on investments that are overlooked by individuals who are not knowledgeable of their securities' rights. In addition, it offers insight into many of Martin Whitman's strategies that he has employed during his long successful career of investment finance. Distress Investing is well written and provides excellent examples that make it an easy read. I would recommend this book to any individual looking to expand their knowledge base beyond equities.

Meant for the Institutional Investor

This book is filled with a lot of knowledge about investing in distressed assets and navigating your way, as an investor, through the the bankruptcy process. However, this book is for institutional or-- in the words of Martin Whitman-- "control" investors. There is close to nothing of value here for the retail investor who is looking to understand this aspect of investing and profit from it. Joel Greenblatt's chapter on bankruptcies in "You Can be a Stock Market Genius" is far more valuable for retail investors.

Too difficult for the layman on the subject

The book may be good for people who are very familiar with distress investing, but honestly that I can not judge. What I can tell is that the book is totally unsuitable for people unfamiliar with the subject. I stopped reading the book somewhere in the middle (and that is the first book in a list of about 70 on investing (or trading) where I gave up) because I was overwhelmed by the jargon and the descriptions of laws surrounding distress investing. I had the impression that it was more a book for lawyers and other people involved in the legal aspects of bankruptcies. But it is definitely not suited for common stock investors. If you don't have THOROUGH knowledge of the field, the book is certainly not for you.

A great overall approach to Lean and Continuous Improvement

I found Gemba Kaizen 2nd Edition, provided a refreshing perspective of the technical side of Lean for those who use the tools and simultaneously present them in an easy to understand manner for those looking for something to "try". Students of Lean, who are being taught what Lean is, will have a better understanding of the "Why" and the "How" in the application of the tools - something that may not be readily apparent in some training classes. Interestingly enough, the author addresses how management can / should use Lean in daily operations and what it means for them. This is certainly an interesting perspective of how Lean "should be" led on a daily basis as (at least in my experience) I've rarely seen any lean training programs address this.

The second half of the book focuses on more than 20 different case studies of successful lean projects led by the Kaizen Institute. I found this very interesting as I'm constantly hearing from different people that Lean is useful only in manufacturing and cannot be applied to any other industry, the standard "we're different from them" response. However, the selections in the book dispel that myth as they highlight a wide range of industries where Lean has been applied successfully including: Medical, Logistics, Electronics and even Transportation (airports.) Some case studies were brief while others were more in depth. I appreciated the author's intent to highlight that Lean can be applied almost universally and successfully too. As someone who's implemented Lean before in various settings, I found myself wanting to learn more about the details of the projects, to see what worked and what didn't work. A drawback indeed but the case studies were definitely useful and intriguing enough to make me reconsider how I might better apply Lean in my job.

Good improvement from last edition.

Overall it is a great introduction to kaizen and the fundamentals of lean management. About half of the book is case studies so it was a quick read for 400+ pages. The variety of case studies are great. It dispels any myth that kaizen only works in Japan or is for only manufacturing. A smaller number of case studies with more details in each of how they got started would be my kaizen idea. Does kaizen ever fail? Maybe the 2nd edition could have included some case studies of unsuccessful examples and what we can learn from them. I'm sure not everybody succeeds with kaizen. In the book maybe there are a few too many Japanese words but I can see the need to learn the technical lingo to make things easier in some cases. Footnote explanations of each new vocabulary word would be my kaizen idea. It's hard to believe more companies aren't doing kaizen already when it is so commonsense and effective! I'm glad I picked this up, now only if I can get my boss to read it! An executive summary version would be useful.

Still one of *the* leading gurus for Kaizen & Lean

After reading Mr. Imai's work a decade or longer ago, I revisited his books over the past year and found that the insights and ideas about Kaizen are still timeless and powerful. Mr. Imai learned directly from Taiichi Ohno, one of the famed creators of the Toyota Production System.

The book "Gemba Kaizen" talks about moving beyond kaizen (continuous improvement) to an approach that is also "gemba" focused (gemba meaning the "actual place" or the place where the work is actually done). These are fundamental concepts in the Lean management approach. While the book's title may make one think the book is only about kaizen methods, Mr. Imai uses the term kaizen to refer to the broader Toyota Production System, so the book covers other topics like 5S, standard work, and 3P (lean design).

The updated version has new case studies from around the world, including more from healthcare settings.

It examines the ways Chadwick's sanitarianism fit the political needs of the much-hated Poor Law Commission and of Whig and Tory governments, each seeking some antidote to revolutionary Charitism. It then reviews the Chadwickians' efforts to solve the host of problems they met in trying to implement the sanitary idea: of what responsibilities central and local units of government, and private contractors, were to have; of how townspeople could be persuaded to embark on untried public technologies; of where the new public health experts were to come from; and of how elegant technical designs were to be fitted to the unique social, political and geographic circumstances of individual towns. Rejecting the view that Chadwick's program was a simple response to an obvious urban problem Professor Hamlin argues that at the time a "public health" focusing narrowly on sanitary public works represented a retreat of public medicine from involvement with the great social issues of the Industrial Revolution. In exploring the views of medical men who were critical of Chadwick, Hamlin suggests the parameters of a public health that might have been, in which concern for health and well-being becomes the foundation of a public medicine that is a principal guarantor of social justice. This book offers modern public heatlh professionals elements of a forgotten professional heritage that might be useful in responding to the bewildering range of health problems we now confront.

Formatting Problems

The book is good, and the Kindle Edition is quite convenient.

However, my complaint is that combinations of letters are missing completely throughout the text, namely "fl" and "fi". This might not bother some people, but personally it really bugs me when letters are completely missing in almost every other paragraph.

I have reported this error to Amazon, and they said they would take care of it as of a week ago. I have re-downloaded the book and still there is the same problem. So far, nothing has been done. (I will update the review when this issue is fixed.)

It works

All the fi and fl letter combinations did not transfer over to the digital copy. For example, if the word was supposed to say difficult, all you'll see is dif cult. Slightly annoying but once I figured out what the mistake was it's pretty to easy to just keep reading like the mistakes aren't there.
