I went from hating microcontrollers to loving them.

Before reading this book I barely had any background with microcontrollers and I hated every class I took on them. I barely made through the those classes as it looks like instructors have hard time teaching them (I still got As but I simply used functions created by somebody else). However, the key of learning is having good sources of knowledge and a desire to learn. This book is definitely one of the greatest sources of information you can find out there. After taking a class on micro-controllers, I still didn't understand where the lab instructor was pulling his info out. This author starts with using SFRs only, which can be found in manual for the pic32mx250f128b controller. MAKE SURE YOU GET THEM FROM MICROCHIP WEBSITE BY SEARCHING THE PIC32MX250F128B on their website. The manual names will start with numbering and there'll be about 52 PDFs. Using this book with the manuals for the microcontroller really made everything clear. Buy this book, read each chapter and as you finish each chapter, read a manual on the topic. It is a must to read manual to understand where the SFRs come from and how each module (ADC, Input Capture, Output Capture and so on) works and should be configured. Also, this book does not have a chapter on Input Capture, but working out each chapter of this book will give you a required insight to figure out IC on your own. I took one star off because author jumps to micros later in the chapter and I would avoid using them if you really want to understand how to configure the device yourself even so it takes more code lines to accomplish. Also, using the parameters passed in the micros you can figure out what SFRs to use and what values to set them to. After reading this book, I went from I HATE MICROCONTROLLERS to I LOVE THIS STUFF LETS DO IT FOR FUN. I just purchased a few books on C to improve my coding knowledge. Also, google TUTORIALPOINT if you want to find good web reference for programming. You know what, F it, I'm giving this book 5 stars no matter what. This book is awesome and Mr. Kibalo rocks. It is obvious to me that the author cared to provide the information as clearly as possible.

This book is a good intro to programming the PIC32 on the Microstick II

This book is a good intro to programming the PIC32 on the Microstick II. If you follow along exactly, the author provides example code, wiring diagrams and step by step procedures. If your goal is to get a project working as soon as possible, this book is the way to go. The instructions
are very straightforward and practical for basic projects. However, the book does not cover any of the topics in particular depth. Just about every topic can be expanded upon. I used this book in conjunction with "Programming 32-bit Microcontrollers in C: Exploring the PIC32" which covers topics much more thoroughly. That said, Kibalo did a good job providing a resource which allows the reader to get their project working after reading only a few pages.

Great starter book

Great starter book.
As usual he wants you to buy his board however, for $48 I bread boarded the pic and used a pickit3. The programs still work.
I guess at least the microstick board could be used as a programmer with MPLab but only for a couple PICs.
Kibalo uses microchips MPLab which has debugging, help, step and unassembly. Its a real IDE.
The PIC32MX250F128B is a great little chip that you can do a lot without breaking the bank and this book has a lot of info for beginners.
This book is a GREAT choice!

A Must Have Book

I purchased this cookbook at a Gluten Free fair and I LOVE the book. I have celiac disease and I am also intolerant to dairy which limits to what I can and cannot eat. I have recommended this book to family and friends. The book has many options that are gluten free and I have been able make other items and leave out the dairy. I highly recommend this book.

Why, when in Rome, you could drink the water.

This book will appeal to two kinds of people: those who have engineering or technical backgrounds, and those who don't. My wife is in the second category. She found the history and details of the water supply gave a fascinating window into ordinary life in Roman times. The problem that every civilization must solve, obtaining and distributing potable water, solved in a characteristically Roman manner by efficient public construction.

As an engineer, I became fascinated with the technical knowledge and skills demonstrated. Both civil engineering and hydraulic engineering expertise, achieving fine results with crude instruments. We marvel at Roman stonework, but keeping a constant slope over several kilometers is more technically difficult.

I found that much of what one knows about aqueducts isn't true. Siphons to cross valleys, instead of more costly and difficult bridges. Manholes at frequent intervals, for manually cleaning out limestone deposits, the bane of the system. Concrete and polished hydraulic cement. Who knew?

While the topics are technical, the writing is clear and self-explanatory, and the text is profusely illustrated. As long as you remember that water runs downhill, you'll be technically comfortable. The text follows the downhill flow of the water through the system, from the lakes or springs, to the cities, to the baths and fountains, to the sewers.

My major complaint is poor availability. Despite Amazon's current (August '05) "normally 3 to 5 weeks" to ship, I've now waited over 30 days for my second copy, and have been advised of at least another 30 day delay. My emailed enquiry to the publisher went unanswered.

I want to share this book with friends, but not my copy. "There are two kinds of fools: those who lend books, and those who return them." So, order yours now. Maybe you'll get it by Christmas. Enjoy!

Fascinating

After reading "Pompeii: A Novel" (Robert Harris) I was keen to read more on the details of the aqueducts that starred in Harris' book and found this book.

If you've even wondered "how did they do it" then this book will tell you. While sometimes a little lacking in punctuation the book flows well and is well illustrated.

I was certainly left with a renewed respect for the Roman engineers after reading this.

And apart from the engineering it gives you an insight into a completely different cultural perspective. Hodge makes the case that, contrary to popular belief, the aqueducts were primarily for what we might view as an extravagance given the cost - public & private baths and water features.

Must have book for Ancient Rome lovers.

I bought this book because it was one of the few recommended books about aqueducts to be recommended to me for my writing about Ancient Rome. I have no engineering experience, but found the book to be very easy to follow and enjoyable to read.

All the questions I had about aqueducts were answered in this book and it gave me more than enough information on the subject.

I wish my history professors in college would have used sections of this book during the discussions on aqueducts because we were taught so little about these engineering miracles.

Hailing from Ohio, Raymer eventually made her way to Las Vegas when she was 24 and found a lucrative position assisting a Queens-born, Stuyvesant High School-educated gambling operator, Dink Heimowitz. The lovable, irascible, big-bellied Dinky had shucked life as a bookmaker back in New York, having run into trouble, for professional sports gambling; he put Raymer and the other motley staff on the phones setting up bets for all kinds of sports matchups (baseball, football, horse racing, hockey) in order to find a line that gave him an edge. Dinky referred Raymer to a high-flying bookie on Long Island, Bernard Rose, who had his own offshore network. A literary parlay in which the reader is often middled

I enjoy books on players of all sorts---criminals, athletes, entrepreneurs, traders, gamblers and noir types in general. They detail the underbelly of our society (often posing as the glamorous top layer) without the reader having to lose all his money, go to jail, or get his legs broken by Angelo. What distinguishes Lay The Favorite is that it's a true story of someone who observes and then slowly becomes corrupted by that world...and doesn't even realize it.

The book ends {mild spoiler here, but not really} with Beth jetting off to Rio on money she's stolen from a "sicko" bettor who had just tried to steal money from her. Her quick moral bookkeeping, apparently done in separate ledgers, seems to escape her irony filter entirely, and in the end she is absorbed seamlessly by the seaminess. It's the perfect ending, for all the wrong reasons.

The best things about LTF are the true tales of the professional sports bettors. Raymer recounts their stories well, and if you like interesting characters, here they are. Dinky is the "hero", for beating the odds as a wildly successful bettor for decades (a million to one shot), while Bernard has the much easier job of fleecing the suckers as a bookie. They both consider themselves losers despite millions stashed away in various shoeboxes (for a while), and their stories are full of fascinating, funny moments, including odd tales of barely legal offshore sports books in Curacao and Costa Rica. These guys might be nutty as squirrels in some ways but they're also very bright, and lots of fun to read about. I'm not sure they and their families will be too thrilled about how they all come off here, but apparently they gave their ok for this. Perhaps not the best wager of their careers.

The worst thing about LTR is having to sit through the author's tales of her personal life, which makes the gamblers by contrast seem balanced and so much more interesting. Raymer casually mentions that when she gets tired of a guy she just stops answering his calls and hopes he goes away; in some ways the gamblers come off as nicer folks. After a while, despite her constant mention of how charmed everyone is by her and how winsome she is, one reaches the sections about her inner turmoils and groans in dismay; this advance copy of LTR hit the floor more than once. How long until we hear about the players again?

Because, all told, it's they who make this book worth reading, and the parts about Beth could be lifted from any memoir of a confused, drifting cocktail waitress who treats men like kleenex and then wonders why she can't gain any traction in life. After working as a stripper and doing online porn, she lucks into working for guys who toss bricks of money around like toothpicks but rarely seems to grasp what a longshot she's hit; one wonders exactly which details we don't get here. Oddly enough, the one part of her life that really is fascinating, her quick rise from neophyte pugilist to fighting in an amateur boxing championship in Madison Square Garden, is given short shrift. If she'd spent the time detailing that unique journey that she spends on meandering, banal tales of her love life, this could have been a really fine tome.

Instead, it feels like there are two books here, one very interesting one about the world of professional sports bettors, and one not very interesting one about an immature young woman's coming of age. Which never really happens, unless becoming the kind of dishonest person she's spent the book chastising counts. Time and again she wonders how everyone can rip everyone else off and why no one cares, and then ends the book by doing it herself and toasting the wisdom of her choice with champagne in first class.

All in all, LTF is well worth reading if you like breezy tales of unique, real-life Runyonesque sharps who beat the gambling world until it beats them (the inherent moral here, however backwardly presented). Or if you like reading about a spacy girl's suddenly shifting crushes on whomever. I'm not sure those two markets overlap, but if they do, this book is a new genre unto itself, a weird literary parlay in which the reader often gets middled.

Apparently this was optioned by Stephen Frears for a movie coming out next year called Lay the Favorite, Take The Dog, and that's great news, as the movie has the choice we readers don't have: excise the boring stuff about the author and focus on the crux of the biscuit--the fascinating guys who for a while get the best of a game that's almost unbeatable. Here's hoping Frears takes the over and lays off the road dog.

Fast-Paced, Entertaining Look Inside the Business of Sports Betting.

Beth Raymer, narrator of "Lay the Favorite: A Memoir of Gambling", was not so much a gambler as an employee of a professional gambler and a bookmaker. She called for rundowns, did pay and collect, dealt with clients, kept the books, and was generally a factotum for a couple of talented sports gamblers and bookmakers in Las Vegas, New York and Curacao in the 2000s. She was in an ideal position to observe how these people and their businesses operate, being in the center of the action but also a bit of an outsider. Raymer was dreaming of being a cocktail waitress at a Vegas casino when she lucked into a job at "Dink, Inc." and into the colorful and somewhat depressing world of sports betting that would consume her for the next few years.

"Dink, Inc." belongs to Dink Heimowitz. A gambler since childhood, Dink ran an illegal and highly successful bookmaking business in New York until a brush with the law convinced him to stay on the legal side of the business. He moved to Vegas to gamble his own money, with much success, but Dink never liked it as much as he did bookmaking. Raymer's only qualification to work in his office seemed to be that her happiest childhood memories were of her father's gambling, and she was friendly and game for anything. Fate later takes Raymer to work for Long Island bookmaker and gambler Bernard Rose, who made $2.5 million betting sports by the time he was 19 years old. Their move to Curacao provides an inside, unflattering, look at offshore sports books.

Raymer clearly adores Dink and Bernard, a pair of talented, self-loathing misfits. It's easy to see with whom her sympathies lie or don't, but her ability to get the reader to agree is sometimes surprising. She has a talent for painting people's flaws with a colorful brush, her own included. And Raymer's ability to adapt to even the most bizarre circumstances without giving it much thought is extraordinary. But she readily admits that everything and everyone in her life have in common their precariousness. She avoids anything that would seem to have a future in it. Adventurousness is admirable, but we always feel that Raymer might be slipping down a troubling path. She's not quite likable or ethical. But she is an evocative writer, and "Lay the Favorite" is an entertaining look behind-the-scenes at some of the guys who beat the sports books.

Interesting enough, but nothing overly special

The world of gambling that Beth Raymer introduces is certainly interesting, but I wouldn't say her book about it was particularly "must read". Not that I was looking for a How To, but I never entirely understood how it all worked (but that could just be me).

Beth was an interesting character, from her past as a private dancer to her actions at the conclusion, but I never really quite got the "why" to some of her actions.

Would also have liked an epilogue of sorts- where is she now, etc.

Football Scouting Methods

This book caused quite a stir back in 2004 or 2005 when it was mentioned in the media. The author is Steve Belichick the father of Bill Belichick the head coach of the New England Patriots. Steve was a noted scout and coach in his own right back several decades ago. This book was one of the first that I know of that attempted to codify some of the thinking and thought processes that go into scouting football.

Originally teams were allowed a certain number of visits in order to scout the opposition. Steve Belichick was a master at this skill and always found small ways to give his teams an advantage. His skills were passed onto his son Bill who developed an even keener eye for scouting opponents tendencies, strengths, and weaknesses.

Today teams of course exchange game film, input data into a computer database and study that content instead of exchanging visits. The basic things they watch for however are still the same although the exact formations and play types change every decade of course. None the less the original questions and points of study that are outlined in this book were influential in their hey day and still of relevance today in concept.

Since the media mentioned this book it has become a hard to find commodity and has become something of a collectors item. I have an old copy that I keep in my football library. The schemes and diagrams are somewhat outdated (e.g. defense examples include a wide tackle six, split six, stacked 6-2, 5-3, and an eagle 5-4 type of alignment. Offense examples include T formations and Winged T alignments) but the basic thought process is still relevant even today.

Reading this book will give you a good sense of the details that coaches zeroed in on back then and what Steve probably taught Bill as a young man many years ago.

Since I wrote this review I see the book has fortunately been re-published and is now available for a reasonable price. I see I also accidentally referred to Steve's son Bill as "Brian" in one location but correctly as Bill in two other locations. A senior moment to which some of you can probably relate...I corrected it above.

Two other older books I am aware of on scouting are George Allen's work "How to Scout Football" published in 1953 when he was still with Whittier College and Robert MacKenzie's book "Football Scouting" from 1955.

Keep in mind the terminology and examples in all these books are dated now by four or five decades.

Good but not Great

I was extremely excited to jump into this book being this was the man who taught Bill Belichick about football. However, as you read the book you realize that a lot of the information is outdated and not applicable to today's game. He mentioned that few teams pass more than they run, and makes numerous reverences to games that took place in the 50's and 60's. Also, the terminology used has its differences as he will reference a nose as a defensive guard among others. Don't get me wrong there are still many valuable tips and important things to learn from this book; just know that there are quite a few pages that won't be useful in today's spread it out, high flying, pass first offenses.

Taking Scouting to the Next Level

Great for any coach who wants to learn the more technical side of scouting football teams. It is not hard to read, but you need to spend the time to study this book.

If you really want to take away information and become a better scout, this is the book for you. But as I said you need to study it. Take notes, underline, and reread passages as you need to.
