He shows that the objectivity required in journalism is not a set of absolute standards but the same "fallible but reasonable" objectivity used for making decisions in professions and public institutions and must be understood as a long and complex interaction between many social, economic, and ideational factors. Ward also shows that the origin of journalism ethics is much earlier than previously recognized, going back to the partisan English newsbooks of the seventeenth centuries. Concern for objectivity gained momentum in journalism in the late 1800s and Ward discusses the many factors that prompted journalists to construct their own idea of objectivity. His proposed theory of pragmatic objectivity draws on studies in epistemology and philosophy of science to construct a richer, more adequate conception of objectivity to guide journalism practice today.

Talks about the ancient origins of ethics

I am a journalism prof (University of Alaska) and I used parts of this book for a class that dealt with the origins of objectivity. This is a well-researched work that begins with explaining why Plato and the cave parable have something to do with peoples' views of truth, absolute truth, the nature of reality and more. Don't think most journalism ethics books go back to the Greeks - but they should - and this one does. I got this from the UAF library; am ordering my own copy.

It then presents several other contexts where these same lessons can be seen in practice, including in the life of Alexander Solzhenitsyn, whose career as a writer epitomized speaking truth to power, and somewhat surprisingly in the United States military, in response to its twenty-first century mission of counterinsurgency.

Interesting, but....

I liked this book; I really did. It had alot of good points. I appreciated the way that the author took one case and carried it all the way through as an illustration of his points about how to best work with families. The question and answer sections after each vignette help the reader generalize what he is doing with he particular family.
Whittaker points out the importance family therapists joining with the family, which means that the therapist has to build enough of a relationship with the family to really connect with them and have them believe he is truly present with them. He showws how important it is for a good therapist to shake the family up a bit and create some disequilibrium, because it is through the creation of anxiety that change takes place. He sees his work as a therapist as not only encouraging the growth of his clients, but also enhancing his own growth. This book will be most useful to a reader who has some background in working with families. The book takes the basic concepts that students will have already learned in a survey course and expands them, giving the reader greater insight into the particular way that one of the leaders in the field practices. In that sense it's really a fascinating book.
I found that the book was too short. I wanted more detail, somehow. I found that it was repetitive in parts, and I disagreed with some of the things that Whittaker said about the nature of the family and the importance of marriage. Some of his beliefs about male/female relationships don't fit for me - they seem rather old fashioned. That, coupled with the fact that it will really only benefit a limited audience, is the reason I'm giving it 3 stars instead of 4.

Good story line. I like that the authors interchanged a therapy session and their own instruction through out the book. There were a fewer dry portions when we weren't in the middle of a session but overall great!

Overall, a very thorough

treatment of the "Great Russian Revolution," utilizing recent scholarship and Professor Wade's own rich analysis. Little-appreciated insights abound, such as the unfortunate Alexander Kerensky's blundering actions providing the catalyst for the October "coup."

Yet I withhold the fifth star in this review because I differ with Professor Wade on a couple of important points. He is much too sanguine on the potential of the Constituent Assembly to deal with Russia's problems by the time of its convocation in January of 1918. By late 1917 Russia was far too polarized for any parliamentary regime to fill the breach. For the CA to have been effective it must have been elected as scheduled in the late summer. Past that date, things had gone far beyond its powers. Even had it prevailed, it would still have had to deal with an insurgent left, and to defend itself would have had to rely on the old army to suppress striking workers, rebellious peasants, seceding minorities, mutinous sailors and soldiers, as well as invading Germans: a recipe for right-wing dictatorship. In fact the old army had betrayed Russian parliamentarianism twice: first in the attempted Kornilov putsch of August, 1917, and then by Admiral Kolchak's overthrow of the Constituent Assembly in Exile in Ufa in November, 1918. Interestingly, the Socialist Revolutionary Party leader Victor Chernov had the unenviable distinction of having been overthrown twice in one year by both opposing sides: as president of the CA by the Bolsheviks, and then by Kolchak. The CA's majority consisted of the same moderate socialists whose waffling on the war and popular demands for land and peace had already provoked the "extremes of right and left." Parliamentarianism was too weak and Russia too riven for the CA to have been the happy end suggested by Professor Wade.

Also he posits that anti-Bolsheviks had "no other choice" but to take up arms after the CA's closing. This is patently untrue. The next three years were rife with many non-violent opposition movements, specifically waves of strikes in the cities and industrial centers, as well as non-Bolshevik political opposition in the soviets. That these non-violent protests did not succeed no more counts against them than the failure of armed struggle to unseat the Bolsheviks.

These caveats taken under consideration, I still highly recommend Professor Wade's book as an effective antidote to the cold war historiography which still stereotypes the subject.

Very well-done overview of the Russian Revolution

This book is mainly a narrative history of the Russian Revolution in its two stages of February and October and everything in between. Rex Wade, a historian at George Mason University, has given a very accessible and solid summary of the developments, issues and people involved in this work. What's more, the book also pays significant attention to women, peasants, and the various minority nationalities, all groups that tend to be forgotten in the all too Petrograd-centered popular histories of the Revolution.

Wade of course also provides the necessary background, both historically (the emancipation of the serfs, the Revolution of 1905, etc.), and of the structure of the parties, their respective bases of power, and their internal points of strife. He does a great job explaining somewhat complicated issues such as the conflict within the Socialist-Revolutionary party, the basis of the split between Mensheviks and Bolsheviks, and the importance of "revolutionary defensism" to the Provisional Government and its subsequent downfall. Wade further shows that contrary to some allegations, the Bolsheviks and their left-radical allies did have a popular majority to overthrow the Provisional Government, though clearly NOT to disperse the Constituent Assembly. He rightfully points this latter act on the part of Lenin, heavily contested even within his own party, as illegitimate and unnecessary, but that the Bolsheviks up to that point had behaved perfectly in accordance with the newly developing soviet system.

"The Russian Revolution, 1917" is an excellent introduction to the history of that fateful year, and recommended for casual readers and beginners interested in the subject. Note that due to the introductory nature of the book, there is very little by way of economic analysis, nor is any significant attention paid to developments in culture.

Extremely well written

While at George Mason University I had the honor of taking a class from Dr. Wade while he was writing this book. It turned out as an outstanding effort. Not only is the book scholarly and well researched, it is extremely well written, a rarity for scholarly historical works. Unlike previous books, Dr. Wade gives significant focus on previously overlooked minorities such as women while still maintaining focus on the workers and pesants.

Simple, Straight-forward and from a legit source

I've been ordering the powdered product for quite sometime now but have always thought that it would/should be fairly easy to grow at home and I was right. It's been a couple months since I've set up my little tank and I'll get about a tablespoon a day from it, which is perfect to supplement my diet with. Plus, I'm amazed at how good the spirulina tastes! You can literally the whole tablespoon plain no prob, tastes almost like an egg yolk, with a creamier texture. Plus, growing it your self is soooo cool! Friends are always asking me what it is and I love having them try the fresh stuff, they are always surprised how good it tastes. Also, Dr. Wolf-Baum (who apparently is also a NASA algae scientist) is available for questions if you need him. I hight recommend this book, especially for 10 bucks :)

Grow Your Own Spirulina is a Masterpiece

Dr. Baum is very well trained on the subject matter. This becomes obvious when you read the book. Being well trained or educated is one skill set. Being able to make this sometimes technical information easy to understand for the diverse population who are interested in this subject is another skill set. What is civilization? How has the word come to take on a hierarchical meaning -- the "civilized" versus the "primitive"? Inventing Western Civilization is about the idea of civilization and how the concept has been appropriated by different groups at different times in order to defend their status. Anthropologist Tom Patterson shows how classism, sexism, and racism were as integral to the appearance of "civilized" society in Western Europe as inequality and alienation. He explains, clearly and simply, how civilization (and the process of "civilizing" and "being civilized") has been closely tied to the rise of capitalism in Western Europe, the development of social classes, and the creation of "others" who are distinguished by their socially constructed appearances, behaviors, or essences. -- Midwest Book Review

Marvelous achievement! Quick, clear, and powerful!

In the short span of 123 pages, Thomas Patterson delivers a stunning and succinct overview of "Western civilization" and its encounters with "savages," different "races," and the Other. He recounts briefly yet movingly the Spanish onslaught of Native Americans, ancient Greek notions of barbarism, the British colonization of Ireland, and more.
But Patterson only gives the briefest sketch of these meetings--he is more concerned with the ever-changing ideologies with which some Europeans justify the wholesale looting, enslavement, murder, and colonization of others around the globe. He portrays conservative and liberal ideas, as well as racial and economic notions. He sketches the involvement of science with racism and colonialism, and he brings to life the deeply classist and sexist hatreds of Europeans elites--hatreds which easily translated into colonialism (inferiors and feminine types around the world "needed" to be ruled).
Remarkably, Patterson manages to find space for critiques of "civilization," both from within European societies and from those they encountered. In this way agency is not restricted to a few rich, White Europeans, and the dialogue is constant and contested.
I assigned this book to my upper division college students, and they comprehended and thrived on this book. It is quick, clear, and powerful--truly a marvelous contribution. I will surely assign it again. Highest recommendation!

Patterson suggested that "civilized people are obsessed with their uncivilized kin and neighbors--[so] they call them savages, barbarians or the `masses' who lack their polish, refinement, and sophistication; who... have moved en mass into their midst."

Patterson develops his argument and explores the idea of civilization in only five short chapters. He examines the constantly changing "social and political conditions in which civilization is produced and deployed."

The work questions conventional knowledge about the idea of western civilization created by white, male, elites to preserve and perpetuate their power in society.

This book was an assigned book in my Introduction to Cultural Anthropology course. Although the premise of the book has nothing to do with the field of cultural anthro, reading it helped me put the notion of "civilization" and such ideas as "culture" and "race" into perspective. Definitely not a book to take to the beach, but a good read for those looking to expand their knowledge of political institutions.
