Very Interesting...

I am from WI so Ed Gein was a household name. I had
read one book before, but this one was MUCH better.
It grabs you from the moment you start it. Even though
you know the ending, it gives you a lot of insight into
Ed Geins world, which was wicked. What you saw on the
outside. A man with no family left, a mother who taught
him women were evil. People made mention of the fact
that he was "weird" but just Eddie Gein. Little did
they know the evil inside his mind and his farmhouse.
Yes, he was mentally ill but I do believe he knew what
he was doing,as he made lampshades etc.
In a way you do feel sorry for him, only a little.
It took me one day to read. Lets just thank he was never
let out....

OUT OF AMERICA'S HEARTLAND...

This is a well-researched book about Ed Gein, the mild mannered, Midwestern psychopath from Plainfield, Wisconsin who, in the nineteen fifties, would shock the nation with his gruesome crimes. Ed Gein would become the basis for the best selling book by Robert Bloch, "Psycho", as well as for the Hitchcock film of the same name. Accounts of Ed Gein's heinous crimes would also enter the consciousness of a young Tobe Hooper who, as an adult, would write and direct the classic cult film, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre".

The author writes a cogent, factual account of the life of Ed Gein and the grisly crimes that shocked the nation at the time of their discovery. It details the hold that Ed's domineering mother had on him, a hold that would manifest itself in unimaginable ways. It is almost hard to believe that this small, inoffensive man could be such a madman, but who but a madman would do what he did? Ed Gein, it was discovered, had turned his small farmhouse into a gruesome charnel house, replete with furnishings adorned with human flesh and bones.

Aficionados of true crime will find this book fascinating, as it is a well-written account of one of the most horrifying and bizarre series of crimes ever to be committed. Eight pages of photographs are included in the book and serve to provide the reader with a brief, visual glimpse into the life of Ed Gein, a man with a secret hobby so depraved that it would shock the entire nation when it came to light. Lovers of true crime accounts will be fascinated by this well researched foray into the life of a seemingly innocuous man from America's heartland who ended up being so deviant from the norm.

You think you've heard them all until...

Either Investigation ID or Bio did a piece on "Eddie" Gein (rhymes with "Fiend") which is why I bought this non-fiction 1987 account of his life & crimes...to see why Norman Bates was based on Wisconsin Eddie is now understandable. Ma had a ginormous destructive effect on young Eddie's psyche and it turned into incomprehensible violence and worse when he came of age in little ol' Plainfield...this is a very objective period piece of the 50's when life as well as most movies were black and white. The author does a great job-covering all the bases- and is objective (which is hard to be in the end). Very much worth a read for those who are fascinated by serial killers; necrophilia; human skin harvesting and the evil that some mothers do...this is a top shelf book in its genre.

Interesting, but a bit of a blur

This book covers approximately 475 years of the history of the Ottoman Empire in 300 pages. As such, I found it to be interesting, but dry and a bit of a blur. There were just too many Sultans and other characters, crammed into too small a space, with the result that the overall picture was very indistinct. I got the feeling that a 30-page chapter in a history book could have summarized the material and presented it a clearer manner. Alternatively, if the book were expanded to several thousand pages, or perhaps broken into several books, the result would also have been clearer. The inclusion of so much material left little room to discuss critical events. Important events like the Crimean War are presented in a few pages, others like WWI were presented in a little bit more but still too few to get a firm grasp on what was going on, which is a shame because the book makes it clear that much of the 20th century history of the Middle East and the Balkans was determined by the events discussed in this book. While somewhat of a blur, the book does describe many reasons for the fall of the Ottoman Empire, namely:
1) While many Sultans tried to modernize the empire, the strong opposition to modernization doomed their reforms and ultimately the empire itself.
2) A number of independent power centers, primarily that in Egypt, developed at the expense of a centralized empire, which led to a fragmentation of the empire.
3) The author cites various experts that ascribed the fall to the Empire's thrust into Europe, which weakened the empire and prevented a focus on Anatolia and the Moslem lands of Arabia.

I can only recommend this book to those who are somewhat familiar with the history of the Turkey and the Balkans. Others, like myself, are apt to find the book hard to follow, and a case of too much material presented in too few pages. The book might also be useful as a reference as it has a useful index, a list of Sultans, and glossary. It has three maps, but no photographs.

Great overview

This is a great overview of Ottoman history from the apex of its power until its final dissolution in 1920. It is a very "top down" history, insofar as the author focuses on the sultanate rather than going into the life of the average ottoman citizen, which is unfortunate, but as far as the illustration of those factors that kept the Ottomans going after all their contemporaries had faded into history it was great.

A good overview of an Empire's painful decline

The Ottoman Empire was referred to "the Sick Man of Europe" in the mid-19th century, giving one the image of a decrepit old man with one foot in the grave - as indeed the Ottoman Empire was for over 100 years before its final, ignoble demise. Alan Palmer provides a good, if broad overview of the possible causes of the Muslim empire's death by a thousand cuts and the reasons why it took so long for it to finally dissolve. However, I found it lacking.
Palmer does an adequate job of outlining the major politcal reasons given for the decline. And for those seeking a an introduction into the last half of the Ottoman empire, this would be a good book to begin with. However, there is much that Palmer does not explore that merits some attention, even in a general history such as this.
For example, very little is mentioned of the Tanzimat Reforms, an attempt in the early 19th century by the Turks to modernize and industrialize along the lines of Europe after the Enlightenment. Similarly, Palmer would have been better served to disucss the role that the "Great Powers" of Europe played in simultaneously propping the Ottoman Empire up (as a balwark against the Russians) while assisting in tearing it down (by supporting the emergence of Balkan nation states.) to a greater degree.
I enjoyed _The Decline and Fall of the Ottoman Empire_, but it did not do the subject matter justice.

An interesting Analytics Book

I had low expectations for this. After all, Google Analytics has very detailed help pages and you can find specific pages for all of the major concepts covered in this book. So what's the point?

Well, maybe there is a point. First of all, someone new to Analytics may prefer the structure of a walk through. But even someone who has been using Analytics from the day they turned it loose in December of 2005 (that's me) can benefit from the specific examples and gotchas detailed here.

For example, I had never thought of tagging links I send out in emails. I don't know why, and it's not that Google's help pages don't mention that. But their page on link tagging is very Adwords oriented, so I missed that you can tag any link. After reading this book, I have even tagged some internal site links so I can easily see if they get used.

I also hadn't thought about tracking outgoing links. Oh, I knew I could, but again I just didn't ever do it. For reasons I can't entirely explain, the section of this book that ytalks about that made me realize that there actually are a few outbound links I would like to track!

The only complaint here is the same complaint I have about far too many books: excruciatingly boring detail in the beginning that far too quickly ramps up to off-hand references without detailed explanation. I do not know why so many technical books exhibit this same pattern, but I suspect it's probably because the basic stuff is easy to detail and the more tech stuff would just get far too complicated. That's fine, I get it, but leave out the detail on the basic stuff. Nobody who is interested in the more complicated subjects needs the detail of the basics!

I do think the book would have a wider audience if it didn't ignore Adsense entirely. The author is probably accustomed to dealing with large sites that don't care much about that, but for many of us little guys, Adsense is an important part of our site income. A bit of attention wouldn't have hurt, I think.

Other than that, this is very good. I picked up some references to tools I did not know about, got some hints that I do not remember noticing in the Analytics Help pages, and have some new ideas percolating in my head.

Google Analytics for the power user

If you know the right knobs, Google Analytics can do just about anything. Of course, the flexibility of the tool also comes at a price: there are a dozen ways to accomplish each task, and often it is not clear which path you should take. This book fills this void by providing a number of great recommendations for how to setup your profiles, why and how to setup profile filters, best practices for instrumenting your links, configure cross-domain tracking, deep dive on the format of the gif hits, and much more. This is a book for a power user. It mostly assumes you are already familiar with Google Analytics, you've read through the docs, you've already setup a couple of profiles, and you've bumped heads with GA on several occasions trying to configure more advanced use cases. Think of this book as your GA consultant in a box - instead much cheaper, and well documented.

Disclaimer: I've worked as an engineer/manager with the Google Analytics team. I would without hesitation (and have) recommend this book even to the GA engineers on the team.

Very technical book but if it is read with calm and patience can be very helpful. This edition is already dated and the newer should be better.

Exposes Gardner's Rhetoric

Pop psychology is full of odd claims. This book is full of it. OK, we'll start with the front cover; Tap into your natural genius. Do you feel like he's yanking on your chain already? Well, he makes a good effort of doing it throughout the book.

After doing some research it turns out that mind mapping is not original, but a copy of a more effective technique, called concept mapping, which was developed earlier than mind mapping. The same is true with Tony Buzan's concepts in this book. They are taken from Gardner's conjecture on multiple intelligences. It turns out that MI theory is actually just rhetoric. These intelligences are not defined, but also cannot be seperated out in tests. It takes the word "intelligent" and turns it into meaningless fluff. Of course, it fits in with Buzan's ideas of left/right brain (which turns out to be pure psuedoscientific myth), and does a further promotion job on the mind mapping concern.

The first chapter tries to persuade that creativity can be easily developed using mind mapping. This is another pure myth, because brainstorming, however useful, is only idea generation, and not creativity per se. He uses Richard Branson as an exemplar. I believe this to be quite a funny mistake.

He goes through each type of "seperate intelligence" and hurls pseudoscience about the field like the proverbial muck spreader.

The most memorable part is the section on sensual intelligence. Tony Buzan recommends masturbation for brain stimulation. I have images of him leading mass jerking seminars for those willing to depart with time and money for the promise of genius.

All this book really does is point out some of the more silly things that Gardner has proposed in his multiple intelligence theorizing. I'd say this book is ok if you want to blindly doze through some ego stroking, but if you go in with your eyes open its really not a pretty sight.

You May Be Smarter Than The Author!

I am a mind/concept/idea mapper. I acknowledge the contribution Mr. Buzan has made to promoting "mind maps" as an important and powerful learning and communications tool.

HEAD FIRST is a multi-million copy bestseller, so apparently pure fluff is in demand. HEAD FIRST is chock full of gee-whiz moments and "Did You Know?" tidbits for which (the paperback 2003 edition at least) has no citations. While pop-pulp readers may be quite comfortable digesting uncited material, HEAD FIRST just gets some things wrong: GALILEO was the first to see the moons of Jupiter, not DaVinci.

DID YOU KNOW? that tidbits without citations may well end up making you look like an idiot even if you are smarter than you think?

The purchase of HEAD FIRST will be money well-spent if you're in need of a mental pep talk. But buyer beware if you're expecting cognitive science.

Totally lame, but thats ok, its only pop psych

OK, the guy is unoriginal. Mind maps have been around for centuries in one form or another, and the actual chap who originated the modern mind map is Dr Allan Collins quite a few years before Buzan. And, yes Buzan used lots of spurious claims and pseudoscience that misleads the learner into using mind maps where they are completely the wrong choice, and teaches people science that has been debunked for decades.

But somebody's gotta do it!

Fortunately, when teaching something as engaging as modern art, it’s easy to have a good time too.

In this book I will showcase prevalent art movements of the 20th century and give instructions on creating kids art projects that will help them understand the ideas and emotions behind those movements. The art movements follow a progressive timeline starting with Expressionism and leading into Contemporary Art. All of these projects can be done with multiple age groups, but there are some that require finer motor skills. Projects for older kids are noted in each section.

For anyone attempting to do projects with kids there are certain supplies that become staples in your cabinet. Aside from the usual suspects (craft paper, safety scissors, washable paint, etc) there are versatile items that will pop up again and again. One of these items is Mod Podge, an adhesive glue that dries completely clear and can be used as a sealant on paper crafts and collages. Once you begin using Mod Podge you will never know how you lived without it. Another versatile supply is condiment and spray bottles. These can be used in a variety of projects that involve paint or gluing, and can cause some messy fun.

For this book, I had the help of a few different kids of different ages who have very little experience with art projects. Some of the finished pieces may look a little rough or unrefined, but that’s ok because the concept was not lost on them. This book really does contain great art projects for kids.

I love this book! It really does have great projects for kids. I can't wait to try them with my kiddos. Contains projects in these styles/movements: expressionism, cubism, surrealism, art deco & art nouveau (a project based on Gustav Klimt's "Tree of Life" is really cool!), folk art, psychedelic art, pop art,pixel art, street art, and comic book art. Each chapter gives a very basic intro. to the style/movement and lists some major artists of the style, which is a perfect jumping off point for more individual research. Next, a project is introduced with simple instructions and list of supplies needed. I was pleasantly surprised by this book.

This has great art ideas for many ages-I can also use it for crafty gifts! This was a good find, I recommend it to anyone who has kids and needs homeschool art ideas, anyone that needs rainy day time killers, or someone like me who is not to creative on my own but can follow instructions. :)

Purple Cover vs. Brown Cover

I have been using this book since I began teaching design and the design process 16 years ago and LOVE IT! BUT, for some reason this version has removed a number of very helpful images and drawings. SO, I recommend ONLY the original Brown cover or the NEW UPDATED CLASSIC in BROWN cover.

approaches to creative problem-solving

A MUST READ: I first found the Universal Traveler Creative Problem-Solving Guide in its 1976 edition, and since then have kept it by my side to review frequently. It is a special treasure of tips on getting organized mentally to solve problems and to meet life's challenges. It balances critical thinking with one's psychological factors superbly. It presents reaching goals and problems--solving as a journey in life, and uses travel as the metaphorical means of conveying its ideas. It starts at the very beginning of one's thought processes to analyze problems, to set goals and to reach solutions and goals. Its life problem-solving strategies are "whole" methods that combine mind, sense and emotion. I like the 1976, edition, with its delightful historical, turn-of-the-century pen sketches. The new, 1991, edition is reorganized and presents the authors' evolutionary travels in problem-solivng adventure, and has late 20th century pen sketched metaphors. This is a valuable book to have. It is a good modern companion to the Dale Carnegie books "How To Win Friends and Influence People" and "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living". It is a great choice for helping to set and met New Year, New Century and New Milenium resolutions.
