A fun read

I thoroughly enjoyed this series. Yes, it's another one of those trilogies that aren't really a trilogy but this one held up throughout. It's not one of your typical enchanted forest fantasies. The characters in this one summer in Australia and winter in New York. It's fun, unpredictable, and well worth the read.

Madness and Butterflies

The Magic of Reason, aka Justine Larbalestier's Magic or Madness trilogy, is a fast-paced fantasy trek around the world. It all starts with a teenage girl named Reason who spent her life with her cheery mother, until her lovely mother went a little mad. Reason realizes that the stories her mom told her were true. This means that magic truly exists, and it runs through the veins of all of the women in her family. Either they use their magic and die young, or they repress it and go mad. One way or another, whatever path Reason chooses is bound to lead her to tragedy.

All of the main players - new friends and old enemies alike - are introduced in the first story, Magic or Madness. In the second book, Magic Lessons, the stakes are raised and the powers of the main characters tested. The final book, Magic's Child, twists up, down, and all around. Her grandmother, who is depicted as a villain in all of her mother's stories, takes Reason in when she has no other place to go and may or may not be as evil as Reason's mother claims. Be they magically inclined or not, the different teenagers Reason meets in Australia and New York change her life forever. The trilogy makes good use of each character, especially in the third book, making each person matter in the grand scheme of things and in personal side-stories. By the close of the trilogy, magic has touched them all in some way, and the climax offers a bundle of surprises.

As a bonus, because Reason travels back and forth between Australia and New York and the various characters use slang from their native countries, each of the Magic or Madness books include a glossary of terms.

First Book: Great! Second and Third: Meh

I own the first book, Magic or Madness, in the trilogy. I read it year ago and re-read it recently. I really liked it and wanted to read the rest of the trilogy. The fact that you can get all three books in one is pretty awesome. However, once I got into the second book and the third, I realized it got really repetitive. I didn't care much for how the story turned out either, not that I am going to spoil it for anyone who is interested. Put it this way, in the first book, Justine builds up magic to seem like it's this complex system, mainly because she did not want to make magic a fix-all, didn't want to give the characters the power to fix all their problems with the flick of a finger, didn't want to oversimplify it. While I thought she did a very good job in the first book, I felt disappointed by the second and third. Just my opinion.

About the Author
NEELAM BATRA was born in New Delhi, India, and moved to Los Angeles with her husband, Pradeep, in 1973. She has taught at local cooking schools in Santa Monica for 18 years, and is the author of two cookbooks, The Indian Vegetarian and Chilis to Chutneys. She has also been a guest and on-air instructor for national TV cooking shows in the United States and India. She lives in Santa Monica, California, with her husband, Pradeep.

NOT a Large Print Cookbook

In my search on Amazon for Large Print cookbooks, I saw this:
"1,000 Indian Recipes (1,000 Recipes) by Neelam Batra (Oct 10, 2002) - Large Print"
and I ordered it.
However, the book I received has tiny print. Even with my magnifying glass, viewing the print is hard on my eyes.
I would not be able to cook from it, unless I photocopy an enlargement of the page.
Certainly I would not be able to cook directly from the book by putting it on a book-stand.
Nevertheless, I did look at the book with my magnifying glass.
The recipes are comprehensive and well described, and the instructions are clear.
The recipes look delicious, and altogether they encompass a broad spectrum of dishes.
As a cookbook I rate it as Excellent. I'm fond of India cuisine, and wish I could cook from this book.
So I recommend the book to others, and encourage others to buy it.
But if someone (like myself) needs a Large Print book, do not buy this book. Despite the description on Amazon that it is a Large Print book, in fact the font size is tiny (not just "regular").
I don't consider this the seller's "fault," as the book's "Large Print" description on Amazon shows a list of sellers.
I'm sure that my experience of receiving this book with tiny print would be the same with any other seller.
It is the description by Amazon of this book that is at "fault," in my opinion.
I haven't yet decided whether to return the book or to give it to someone.
Yet, as a cookbook, I consider this book Excellent.
My Lesson Learned: Unless a book listed on Amazon has "Large Print" in the title or the publisher indicates that it is Large Print, do not depend upon the Amazon "Large Print" designation to be accurate.

A lifetime's worth of recipes

This book's print is small--it has to be! But for a book with this much content, it is a physically manageable size. The author uses ingredients generally available here. Most small to medium urban areas now have Indian groceries, and there you can find just about whatever you need. If you have any difficulty, you can find many things right on Amazon (if you can wade through their ADD product listings--it does get tiring to fight one's way through a gazillion items that are not what you need). I've only tried one or two recipes and I do have some recommendations. If you're a newby like me, read through the recipe a couple of times. Prepare the different parts in advance and then combine. You won't like every dish you try, but that's okay. Her recipes are clear about what goes in and what you have to do with it, but it is also plain she's a much more experienced cook than I. Spend some real time reading and studying the supplemental sections (like spices). It will pay in the long run. It delights me to have an endless supply of Indian recipes by someone who knows her stuff and is writing for Americans.

Awesome Cookbook!

This is my favorite Indian cookbook. It has a lot of recipes as you can tell from the name, and they're authentic and delicious. For people who aren't used to cooking Indian food, I would recommend you try Madhur Jaffrey's Indian Cooking and Julie Sahni's Classic Indian Cooking first. Those books are easier to follow, they use more common, easy to find spices and they also give meal plan suggestions (i.e what main entree to eat with what side dish), while this book doesn't. The recipes in this book are more complex, but worth the work. For taste and variety, this book is a must have. I didn't give it 5 stars because you have to flip back and forth a lot because a lot of the recipes require other recipes from the book like pastes. The recipe within a recipe gets annoying.

If you're experienced with Indian cooking, I definitely recommend this book. If you're not, I suggest getting the hang of it first, but definitely purchasing this book later on. A lot of spices or ingredients like heeng (asafetida), kari leaves, methi (fenugreek), and kala jeera are difficult to find outside the Indo-Pak communities, but Batra helpfully offers a list of websites from which you can purchase them.

Powerful devotional poetry.

If you are at home in bhakti, and you have a warm heart for the Goddess Kali, and you also love poetry, then this book may well be very welcome for you.

The texts in this book are 'in between' poems, songs and prayers, and were originally written by Ramprasad in 18th-century Bengal.
Lex Hixon did a good job and put these poems freely into clear, modern English.
It is clear Lex Hixon is familiar with the basic experiences of Ramprasad and there is clarity and power (sakti) shining through the lines.

Ramprasad was a sakta (primarily devoted to the Goddess, Devi) and his work was a source of inspiration for Ramakrishna, who lived about a century later. (Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna)
In Saktism the Mother-Goddess (Devi) is seen as the highest deity, also as Sakti (sort of 'cosmic energy personified').
Devi is known in many forms (like Durga, Kali, Parvati) and has a strong ambivalent character: benevolent and frightening, creating-preserving-destroying. (Devi: The Mother Goddess - An Introduction and Hindu Goddesses: Visions of the Divine Feminine in the Hindu Religious Tradition (Hermeneutics: Studies in the History of Religions))

In these poems the power and energy, the character and atmosphere of Ma Kali comes to the fore very well: dynamic, ambivalent, unbound, awe-inspiring, a-rational, untamable; at times fierce, turbulent, fiery, unpredictable, overwhelming, effective.

You have to like this kind of poems, but if you do so, then most poems in this book will be great and it will inspire in a pleasing and effective way.

Rivalling the Gita

This book has surpassed the Bhagavad Gita as my most treasured book-type companion on the journey. It is a collection of beautifully, brilliantly, grittily translated poems of Ram Prasad, although Hixon probably improvised somewhat working from the authority of his own expanded consciousness. So the voice, the singer of these love songs to God, is perhaps a magnificent sum of two great, great souls. At any rate, each poem takes me straight into my own experience (it really resonates) and then stretches my paradigms and then finally casts the stunning light of non-dualistic wisdom within. So sometimes I feel like I have traveled through a whole lifetime of spiritual growth from reading one poem! Each one fans the fires of my longing for closeness to the Divine while never glossing over the reality of our foibles and intractable paths of the mind and ego. The book is a day-to-day manual on how to live in a body on earth from the very heart of the Vedas, from the perspective of absolute surrender and rapture in the Mother of the Universe. I read at least one poem every morning as my spiritual nutrition and it frames how I step into the day. I couldn't recommend this book highly enough.

Inspirational, Ecstatic, Devotional Poetry

This is one of the most inspirational collections of devotional poetry I have ever read. Lex Hixon does an excellent job of expressing the essence of Yoga philosophy and Tantra in poetic English. The combination of the ecstatic musings of the 19th century Bengali poet, Ramprasad and the modern lively English of Lex Hixon has created a masterpiece. I would recommend this book to all interested in the devotional experience of Tantra as well as the Vedanta philosophy. The beauty of the book is that you need not be a scholar to experience the mystical vision of Tantra Yoga.

A great reference...wish it had been published years ago!

I've always been a fan of GDAL and OGR. However, the online documentation is pretty sparse. I've used these utilities for pretty basic processing tasks and I've always known there was much more potential than I was realizing. This book provides a very thorough treatment of the entire suite of command line utilities. It includes detailed explanations of all the tools and their switches. The first part also includes examples of using each utility. A great desktop reference that I have been using regularly since I bought it.

The GDAL Toolkit is chuckful of ETL commandline tools for working with 100s of spatial (and not so spatial data sources). Sadly the GDAL website only provides the basic API command switches with very few examples to get a user going with. I was really excited when this book was announced and purchased as soon as it came out. This book makes a great reference manual for using GDAL/OGR suite of command line utilities.

Several chapters are devoted to each commandline tool, explaining what its for, the switches it has, and several examples of how to use each one. You'll learn how to work with both vector/(basic data no vector) data sources and how to convert from one vector format to another. You'll also learn how to work with raster data and how to transform from one raster data source to another as well as various operations you can perform on these.

This is a great book for any GIS pro to get their hands dirty and learn how to use spatial tools to do some amazing things. The benefit of using the tools covered in this book (GDAL/OGR) is that you could learn to integrate these tools into other workflows, such as downloading the latest raster data for your organization on weekly basis and running the necessary tools against it.

The first part of the book is filled with some great examples to get you familiar with using these tools and the rest of the book covers the documentation of these tools in detail. This should be on every GIS pros bookshelf.

This is a facinating book. Written by John Haywood, who was a judge in NC. At retirement he went of to follow his love of history. The book includes a lot of mysteries and native American explanations of some of those mysteries.

It's basically the original book photocopied onto the pages of a new book. It is clear, readable, and helps paint a picture of not only the Native history of Tennessee but also how settlers viewed that history. Very fascinating.

Dr. Naresh K. Malhotra is Regents' Professor (Highest Academic Rank in the University System of Georgia), College of Management, Georgia Institute of Technology. He is listed in Marquis "Who's Who in America" continuously since 51st Edition 1997, and in "Who's Who in the World" since 2000. He received the prestigious Academy of Marketing Science CUTCO/Vector Distinguished Marketing Educator Award in 2005 In an article by Wheatley and Wilson (1987 AMA Educators' Proceedings), Professor Malhotra was ranked number one in the country based on articles published in the "Journal of Marketing Research" during 1980-1985. He also holds the all-time record for the maximum number of publications in the "Journal of Health Care Marketing," He is ranked number one based on publications in the "Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science" (JAMS) since its inception through Volume 23, 1995. He is also number one based on publications in JAMS during the ten-year period 1986-1995. In an Editorial by Schlegelmilch (JIM, 11(1), 2003), Malhotra was ranked number one based on publications in the "International Marketing Review" from 1992 to 2002. He is also ranked number one based on publications in the "International Marketing Review" since its inception (1983) to 2003 (Table V, IMR, 22(4) (2005)). He has published more than 100 papers in major refereed journals, including the "Journal of Marketing Research," "Journal of Consumer Research," "Marketing Science," "Management Science," "Journal of Marketing," "Journal of Academy of Marketing Science," "Journal of Retailing," "Journal of Health Care Marketing," and leading journals in Statistics, Management Science, Information Systems, and Psychology. Inaddition, he has also published numerous refereed articles in the proceedings of major national and international conferences. Several articles have received best paper research awards. He was Chairman, Academy of Marketing Science Foundation, 1996-1998, and was President, Academy of Marketing Science, 1994-1996, and Chairman, Board of Governors, 1990-1992. This book has been translated into Chinese, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, Hungarian, and French. In addition to the six translations, this book also has several English editions including North American, International, European, and Australia & New Zealand. The book has received widespread adoption at both the graduate and undergraduate levels with more than 144 schools using it in the USA. His book, "Basic Marketing Research: A Decision-Making Approach," Second Edition, was published by Prentice Hall in 2005. Dr. Malhotra has consulted for business, non-profit and government organizations in the USA and abroad and has served as an expert witness in legal and regulatory proceedings. He has special expertise in data analysis and statistical methods. He is the winner of numerous awards and honors for research, teaching, and service to theprofession, including the Academy of Marketing Science, Outstanding Marketing Teaching Excellence Award, 2003. Dr. Malhotra is a member and Deacon, First Baptist Church, Atlanta. He lives in the Atlanta area with his wife Veena, and children Ruth and Paul.

First time rental

I haven't rented a book in the past so this is my first experience, but I think comments regarding the books condition would be a good idea, like in the seller's marketplace. The book was listed as being in good condition, but I was not expecting to see a whole chapter with highlighting. I might have chosen a different copy had I known, as I do not like to study with someone else's highlighting and notes.
