True pornography began in the mid-1700s with Samuel Richardson's voyeuristic novels Pamela and Clarissa , in Wilson's odd estimate. The author of The Outsider , etc., further maintains that sexual perversionssuch as those catalogued by Richard von Krafft-Ebingscarcely existed before 1740; only after Romanticism unleashed modern imaginations did sexual deviance flourish, he asserts. The "sexual outsiders" whose deliciously naughty doings are chronicled in this thought-provoking, entertaining mishmash are men who used libido as rocket fuel to escape the body's confines and soar toward higher consciousness. They include Swinburne and T. E. Lawrence, both of whom liked to be flogged; Yukio Mishima, trapped inside his womb-like subjective world; Byron, titillated by an incestuous affair with his half-sister; egoist Henry Miller; and guilt-ridden, promiscuous homosexual Ludwig Wittgenstein. Wilson's starting-point is Charlotte Bach (born Carl Hajdu), a Hungarian male transvestite of whose farfetched theory of eros and evolution the author makes too much as he hammers home his thesis that sex resides as much in the heart and the imagination as in the loins.

IMAGINATION AND HUMAN EVOLUTION

The literary reviews of THE MISFITS mostly emphasize that Wilson's book is worth reading because it is about sex, and specifically about the sexual deviations of many famous people, including Paul Tillich, Havelock Ellis, and Carl Jung. This does indeed make the book fascinating. In fact, the book could well be entitled "A History of Pornography," or more generally, "A History of Sex in Western Literature." But this is NOT what the book is really about.

The basic thesis of THE MISFITS is that man is capable of being in control of his own evolution through the power of his imagination. The primary problem is that our imagination is too often embroiled in -- and hence stunted by -- indulgence in sex. People cultivate the indulgent child within themselves because it gives them so much pleasure; but such cultivation of sexual deviation leads to self ignorance and lack of self control. Most people probably know the joke that the brand name Adidas stands for, "All day I dream about sex." Unfortunately, this is really an accurate description. So if one did not waste so much mental energy obsessed with sexual and romantic daydreams, what would occupy one's mind instead? This is the important question Colin Wilson addresses. The human mind most often functions like a robot - like Susan Blackmore's "meme machine" - so we spend most of our time in dreary triviality and repetition, with a worm's eye view of the world. Colin Wilson presents the optimistic premise that we can develop the imagination to give us a bird's eye view of the world, and hence give life meaning. This makes him one of the most important writers of our time.

Wilson is often criticized for being gullible and superstitious. He speaks of developing "hidden powers," the most important of which is "Faculty X: the ability to suddenly grasp the reality of other times and places," all of which smacks of the occult (and in fact, on of Wilson's most interesting books is THE OCCULT). In THE MISFITS, Wilson employs Rupert Sheldrake's theory of "morphic resonance," which includes the notion that when something has once been learned by some people, other people can learn it more readily. Sheldrake is generally considered a crackpot by the mainstream scientific community, and it has even been suggested that his books should be burned. This assessment is supposed to be based on Sheldrake's flawed scientific procedure. This might be so, though I have only heard his ideas denigrated, and have yet to hear specific reasons why his observations are untrustworthy. If consciousness is an intrinsic property of the universe, and there is no reason why this assumption is less reasonable than the assumption that it is an unintended consequence of blind physical processes, then such phenomena as synchronicity and morphic resonance are not inherently absurd.

Flawed but interesting.

This book is fundamentally flawed. It accepts, Lamarckism (the inheritance of acquired characteristics), still more ridiculously that 'advances in the level of human consciousness can be passed on by a kind of magnetic induction', and ultimately that 'life is fundamentally good'.
So, for Wilson there is no struggle for life and survival of the fittest.
The basic thesis of this book is also a non event: the author refutes the theory that sexual deviation stays on a higher step on the evolution ladder than normal sexual behaviour.
But for those who didn't read the biographies of Byron, de Sade, D.H. Lawrence, Wittgenstein, Swinburne, Joyce, Mishima, H. Miller, P. Tillich, A. Koestler, P. Grainger and others, they will find good analyses of their attitude to life (and sex).
This book also contains good comments on some basic ideas about sex (physical and psychological) and on the importance of imagination.
I confess that I had to consult more than once a solid English dictionary in order to understand the laundry list of sexual deviations.
All in all, a very mixed bag.

My professor required a CD + access code for her class, so I bought the book from Amazon and it did NOT come with a CD + access code. Evidently, the manufacturer's website has the SAME copy like you see HERE; what's more, you ALSO have to buy the access code separately from them, which requires more $$$; thus, you're better of purchasing the book at your local school textbook store. My school textbook store has the book include with CD + access include for only $10.00 more from Amazon's $114.00 price.
Amazon should've add in the title, "does not include CD"!

This product does not come with an iprofile code which is half the price of the book, but with no price drop and no sign that it does not come with one. If you are going to need the Wiley code you are better off getting this book from the school campus.

does not include online access code

i was told to get this particular book (specific ISBN number) for a nutrition course. this ISBN should have included an online access code to WileyPlus but it did not. I spent extra to purchase a new copy of the book to ensure that this was included so i was disappointed to find that it was not. i had to return the book, buy a used copy (for cheaper), and then purchase the access through the online portal for the course. huge hassle.

Great beginning art book for kids!

This spiral bound books gives great foundational lessons for markers, colored pencils and paint. My six year old, who loves art, really enjoys this book. Most of the assignments are done right in the book, so at the end of it, the child will have a great art portfolio all in one place. I'm buying another one for my five year old as well. I absolutely recommend it!

I love this book and it's practicality but I think with the way my children learn they simply just couldn't get into it. That is not the authors fault though. This book is clearly laid out and provides a great foundation. I personally found the book very helpful and the activities age appropriate and I think it just has to do with my kids learning style.

Tab and Strum pattern

The problem with internet tabulature websites is you are never sure they are 100% right - as evidenced by dozens of 'versions' of the same song. As a kid growing up in the 70's I was a Croce fan by virtue of my parents being Croce fans. This book contains the chord tabulature, but also the finger style. In addition, each song contains a recommended strum pattern or picking pattern, one of the hardest things for novice guitar players to pick up, in my experience. This book was gold for the cost, I highly recommend it.

It is a very good book for beginners or whoever want to refresh and advance their programming skill to C++ (like me). The only problem that I have with this book is it's a little bit too wordy, some of the concepts shouldn't be too hard to explain with short paragraph or short example.

Coming from a Engineering background, a lot of the examples in other texts were a bit dry. What I needed was a book that I could use to solve Engineering type problems. This book did not disappoint and I would say that not only is it the best book for Engineers to learn C++ in, it is the best book for anyone to learn C++ in. If you need a good Engineering applications book for C++ this is the one for you.

Does not address needs of engineers and scientists

Engineers and scientists use multidimensional arrays extensively. One of the real deficiencies of C and C++ is that multidimensional arrays are not built into the language (at least not in the sense of Fortran or Ada). Because of this deficiency, you must use frequent workarounds when trying to write functions that handle multidimensional arrays in which any or all dimensions might vary. Unfortunately, the Bronson book does not even indicate that such a problem exists, let alone address workarounds. The Barton book, Scientific and Engineering C++, although it is somewhat dated, is a much better book for engineers and scientists.

Useful guide for supplemental first grade education

This was the exact guide I needed to supplement my daughter's public school education.

A little about my family, since that might help others in a similar position:
My first grader attends a very good public school. While I think her school is doing an excellent job with the core basics, I find it lacking in areas of history (especially world), the arts, music, and exposure to classic literature. I've considered homeschooling, but I love my career. Because I work full time, I don't have time to create my own curriculum or guidelines for educational standards. I'm interested in the Classical education model, as well as the Charlotte Mason model and Waldorf models, to a lesser degree.

This book gives a clear plan for exposing your child to subject that matter that is generally missing from or under-represented in modern classrooms. I find I tend to bite off a little more than I can chew, and definitely more than my daughter can. I appreciated the breakdown of when to teach what.

The sections are short and sweet, with a lot of room for expansion. This could possibly be used for a homeschooler, but would need supplementation. I love it for us because it guides me through what I should be teaching and still leaves it open-ended enough that I can expand and flesh out our learning sessions.

My daughter has responded very well to the content. She is engaged while we read and is able to understand what I'm saying and demonstrate that she is grasping the material. Just ordered our book for next year too and I'm really excited to dive into that one and see if the series holds up.

Just as good as newer version

I'm using this to supplement my first grade homeschool curriculum. It goes in our "morning basket" as a read aloud book that I read to my daughter a few pages each morning. I like that it's broken into different sections (literature, history, math) and lays out the basics that are reasonable to call "common knowledge" for a first grader. However, I find the easiest way for us to use the book is to simply read aloud straight through (skipping the adult teaching sections).

So much help for a reluctant homeschooling mom.

I'm a homeschooler. Only because my son has life threatening medical issues. And I stress out about not having him on par to other kids in school. This book is SO helpful as a guide. It even is chock full of stories, poetry, activities, etc. I have the Kindergarten book by the same company and that is also wonderful. I am still using things out of the K book as well will use this one for his 1st grade homeschool year. Very glossy, high quality pages.

Great book! It shows the you the truth of how we got our present Bible and what role the Catholic Church play in that, if any at all! This book also shows the innacuracies of versions other than the KJV.

Interesting theories, unconvincing

The theories Daniels presents are interesting, but ultimately unconvincing. This is largely because the book lacks primary sources (or any sources) for its boldest claims. Many of the secondary sources come from other Chick Publications books. That alone does not disprove any of his claims, but it does make it difficult to convince an objective Protestant, a Catholic, or anyone Daniels/Chick would consider a non-believer. This book is best going to strengthen the faith of those who already agree with its premise, namely, that the Catholic church is evil, the Whore of Babylon, and is working hard to destroy God's "true word," the King James Bible.

Various problems:

*Daniels praises Erasmus for preserving and translating the "textus receptus" which he claims is the true word of God. But Erasmus didn't have the whole New Testament, and had to back translate using Jerome's Vulgate (which Daniels said is a perverted Bible)

*Daniels repeatedly says Catholics venerate Origen as a saint and church father. This is not true. He was condemned for heretical beliefs including, but not limited to, the pre-existence of souls, something he took from Plato but not from the Bible. For this reason, among others, Origen is respected but is not raised to the status of saint or father.

*Neither is Alphonsus Liguori a church father. He is seen as a "Doctor of the Church," which is something entirely different. Doctors are men and women who are great theologians throughout history. Fathers are men who lived in the first few centuries that helped form the church's teachings. Some fathers are doctors; some are not. Some doctors are fathers; some are not.

*From what I could tell, the Vaduois did not exist until the 12th or 13th century. Some Protestant theologians tried to tie them to earlier groups, but this is definitely a minority position not accepted by objective historians without an agenda.

Benefits of the book:

*Rightly points out the danger of the "big Bible" industry, whose goal is to make money.

*Rightly cautions us to show a profound reverence for the word of God, which means not just accepting any Bible version that comes along.

*Rightly points out the problems of the history of the Catholic Church, which lessens its credibility. But some Catholics may point to Matthew 23:2-3 (KJV), "[Jesus] Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not." Likewise, if the Catholic church's bishops have the authority of the apostles, it could apply to them as well and be interpreted as, "The bishops and Popes sit in the apostles' seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not."

My kids love this book

I downloaded this book when it came out, on my Kindle. My kid (6 yrs old) and I went through it first, and it was a lot of fun. The pictures add a lot of creativity and fun. Now she does it on her own after school, and it's really helping her get ahead.

Another winner vroooooooooooom!

The Mazor/Rosenberg series focussing on education to help raise children with morals and social awareness in a world that has trivialized good character and worthy deeds in favor of materialism and shallow ideals, is an important stalwart of the fiber that has brought all the goodness to healthy families, raising emotionally and psychologically mature and healthy children.Keep up the great work!

Wow, my child had no idea regarding some types of transportation seen inside this book. I can see this as being a great teaching aid on so many levels. This book was a great idea to create. Schools need more like it. Keep up the great work.
