Worth every penny!

This book is worth every penny I paid! Once you get past the "how-to" of tablet weaving (and there are plenty of books and websites to teach you that) you'll find yourself wanting more. This book is packed with full color patterns for you to use. It will also help you go further in your understanding of how the turns affect the colors and patterns in your bands and you can make your own variations on his patterns. Not only is this book a valuable resource, you can accompany it with John's website and awesome program so you can design your own bands. [...] This is a must have book for tablet weavers.

This book is easy to follow. Was hoping that it would have some info about how to warp the loom but did not and referred readers to other books. Have made several card projects already and was able to be successful the first time.

Great Pattern Book for a Beginning Weaver

To begin with, I haven't actually bought this book but have perused it a few times at our local yarn shop with my fellow narrow band weaving friends. Our conclusion was unanimous. The patterns found within aren't particularly spectacular or eye-catching, but it's difficult to do that with your basic equal-number-of-turns-forward-and-back band. I was hoping to find a few threaded-in patterns with multiple packs, but was sadly disappointed in that aspect.

For a beginner, though, who has no interest in designing his or her own patterns (which is the answer to the question in the previous author's review 'what do you do when you get past the patterns provided in the teaching book?'... well, that or 'google more patterns online') this is a perfect resource. There are plenty of patterns in here that will help you learn the structure of the weaving so that you can either move on to more complex tablet weaving techniques or begin to draft your own patterns.

Talking about designing patterns, I would have liked to have seen more of a section dedicated to teaching beginners to design their own threaded in patterns. A discussion of how, rules of thumb, color theory, and the mechanics of using multiple packs with a threaded in pattern would be a lovely addition to this book, should it get a second printing.

In general, as a tablet-weaver of a decade, it wasn't worth my $40, for a beginner who is hungrily searching for more projects, it's a perfect buy.

This book is intended for an international audience of practicing and future managers. It is written in English, the international language of business. The subject is marketing channels, the companies that come together to bring products and services from their point of origin to the point of consumption. Marketing channels are the downstream part of a value chain. The originator of goods or services gains access to a market through marketing channels. Channels of distribution are a critical element of business strategy.

The ideas in this book apply to any channel for any product or service in any market. The generality of the book is shown in its many examples taken from all over the world. These cover a wealth of different products and services, sold to businesses and consumers, selected from the worldwide business press, research, and consulting. Some examples are autopsies; dog and cat food; personal computers; pleasure boats; dolls; stereo speakers; fast food; tires; garden products; fast-moving consumer goods; maternity clothing; uninterruptible power supplies; maintenance, repair, and operating (MRO) goods; furniture; automobiles; airline travel services; and mutual funds. The variety of the list reinforces the generality of the principles. As is appropriate for an international readership, the presentation of each example is as though the reader is unfamiliar with the product or market in question. This book covers the highlights needed to frame the problem, then covers the channel issues in the examples. Channel Sketches provide detailed examples to improve the readability of the main text.

Each chapter is designed to stand on its own. The chapters may be read in any order, and any chapter may be omitted. Each chapter is of a length that can be assigned for a single class or read in one sitting with a single issue in mind. The chapters are designed modularly. Essential definitions are repeated where necessary so that the reader is free to choose one chapter and defer or omit another. Reference is made to other chapters when appropriate for the reader to go further into any topic raised in the chapter at hand. In this way, the reader can select how deeply to delve into all the sections of the book that most closely fit the problem under consideration.

The content of each chapter comes from the best of current research and practice. This book covers a vast and varied literature, bringing in findings, practice, and viewpoints from multiple disciplines (marketing, strategy, economics, sociology, law, political science) and from the best practices of channel managers worldwide. In presenting these works, the focus is on framing the problem and its solution in the language of business rather than on the technical aspects of the research. Yet the book introduces technical vocabulary in the appropriate instances for the manager. The theory, data, and methods that underlie the content of this book are not detailed. Instead, the relevant references are liberally noted and tied to the content, so that the interested reader may delve further into specific points.

The text is organized into four parts. Part One, "Introduction and Analytic Framework for the Book," introduces the basic ideas and concepts underlying channel analysis. It explains why specialized institutions and agencies have emerged to assist in the task of making goods and services available for industrial, institutional, and household consumption. Among the more critical concepts introduced in Chapter 1 are the notions of "service outputs" and marketing "flows" on which the remainder of the book relies heavily. Chapter 2 provides a coherent framework for building, maintaining, and analyzing channel structure and function. It includes demand-side analysis, supplyside analysis of both channel flows and channel structures, the analysis of gaps on the demand and supply sides, and responses by channel managers concerning the creation or modification of channel structures to meet target segments' needs. It also emphasizes the importance of ongoing management and coordination of the channel through the use of channel power sources and the recognition and management of channel conflict. This framework unifies the discussion throughout the rest of the book and forms the basis for the book's approach to channel design and management.

Part Two, "Channel Design: Demand, Supply, and Channel Structure," develops the framework for channel creation or modification. Chapter 3 focuses on the demand side by discussing how to segment a market for the purposes of channel design appropriately, using the core concept of service output demands. Chapter 4 turns to the supply side of the channel, introducing the concept of channel flows to describe the work done by channel members. This chapter emphasizes the importance of distributing flow responsibilities to channel members who can perform them most efficiently. Not only is the allocation of flows important, so is the issue of channel structure. This is the topic of Chapter 5, which discusses the types of firms that can and should be included in the channel, how broadly distributed the channel's products should be, and who specifically should be a member of the channel. Chapter 6 brings together the demand and supply sides through a discussion of gap analysis, whereby gaps can exist on the demand side, the supply side, or both. Sources of gaps, types of gaps, and methods of closing channel gaps are all discussed. Chapter 7 discusses a key issue in channel structure: whether to vertically integrate the channel. This chapter covers the make-or-buy issue in channels, as well as the decision whether to adopt an intermediate solution. These options blend the features of make and of buy. The next part of the book covers how to create such a midrange solution.

Part Three "Channel Coordination and Implementation," discusses how to get all the members of a channel to work in concert with one another. A fundamental issue underlying almost every attempt to coordinate a channel is how thoroughly a marketplace is covered (how many places a customer could buy a product or service). The intensity of distribution is related to vertical restraints (such as tying contracts and resale price maintenance) and to how many brands a channel member carries (the degree of exclusivity in dealing). These topics are the subject of Chapter 10. Power, conflict, and intensity of distribution all turn on how to influence channel members. Because efforts to coordinate often run afoul of the law, the legal environment (Chapter 12) closes this part.

Part Four, "Channel Institutions," describes and evaluates the predominant institutional forms at each level of a marketing channel. The retailing level has a great variety of form: The major issues and challenges confronting them are discussed in Chapter 13. This chapter focuses on physical stores, which customers visit. Chapter 14 covers the rapidly growing nonstore alternatives, including electronic channels, catalogs, and direct selling. Further up in the value-added chain is the wholesaling sector, the subject of Chapter 15. A critical element of value added in marketing channels is logistics and sup-, ply chain management, the topic of Chapter 16. Finally, Chapter 17 deals with the fascinating, complex, and inherently contradictory channel institution of franchising, discussing how, when, and why franchising works.

The sixth edition differs from the fifth edition in its organization of material, but not in its philosophical underpinning. The framework for analysis is presented first, followed by institutionally oriented chapters, rather than the reverse, as in the fifth edition. The framework is also expanded over more chapters, each of which can be the focus of a single course session. The book is significantly internationalized throughout, reflecting the importance of channel management issues throughout the world. This edition also provides extensive coverage of the impact of electronic commerce on channel design and management, both in examples in each chapter and in the separate treatment of the issue in Chapter 14.

Great update for a seminal book (REVIEW UPDATE: March 23, 2006)

Marketing Channels is a must-own for any executive who thinks strategically about the way in which customers buy their company's products.

Like the sixth edition, the seventh edition is organized around a comprehensive framework for channel strategy. Each chapter walks through a different element of the framework. This approach integrates a wide range of material while making it easy to sample just the strategic topics that are relevant to your business.

The seventh edition continues the evolution of the book toward an approach well-grounded in the real-world economics of channels. Much of the content has been carried over from the sixth edition, although the book's structure is more streamlined. A lot of superfluous and outdated material from earlier editions has finally been cleaned up.

The chapter on vertical integration has been rightly moved into the "Channel Implementation" section. This is an outstanding chapter that provides a truly unique synthesis of marketing strategy and economic reasoning.

I have only two minor quibbles. One, the book is beginning to lag behind actual management practice. For instance, the discussion of margin vs. fee payments, new to the seventh edition, receives a scant four paragraphs. Two, the chapters on channel institutions (Retailing, Wholesaling, and Logistics) should either be expanded or more closely integrated with examples in the text. In addition, the data presented in these chapters are often out-of-date, in some cases by more than ten years.

As both a channel strategy consultant and one of Erin's former students, I can personally vouch for the validity of their insights into channel strategy. You will not be disappointed by the quality and rigor of thinking in this book.

Comprehensive book for channel explanations

This book is very well structured with a good logic flow, examples and explanation of channel from design to conflict to power etc. Anyone who is interested in learning channels, distribution, retail, should get a copy of this book. The language is a bit dry, though it is expected for a text book, it is a little harder for me to digest the material because of the writing therefore four stars instead of five. However, a comprehensive book overall!

every CEO should read this book

This edition is really a significant leap forward with so many great examples bringing the framework and principles to life. All the other changes help to broaden the readership appeal and increase the book's usability.

For me, this is the definitive text in the emerging discipline of routes to market and is of tremendous value to channels managers, marketing managers and anyone responsible for their organisation's routes to market.

In fact, never mind the marketeers, every CEO should be required to read it.

CHAPTER 1

Lady Gooddog sat glaring at her only son across the breakfast table. “What did you do to Lumpy Space Princess on your picnic yesterday?” she demanded, her voice echoing off the tall ceiling of the dining hall.

“Nothing,” Sir Jacobus said with a shrug of his broad shoulders, his muscles rippling under his luxurious golden fur.

“You had to have done something,” Lord Gooddog insisted as he helped himself to another large slice of apple breakfast pie.

“I didn’t. I swear,” Sir Jacobus said, sounding a little defensive. “All I did was eat the sandwiches she made, and then drink the apple juice she’d squeezed, and then take a nap on the blanket that she quilted to celebrate the picnic. After that, Finn and I went to check out the barrel races, which were totally rad.” Mr. Finnish Biped, aka Finn, was Sir Jacobus’s Hu-manservant. He was known throughout the Kingdom of Plaid for his love of battle and his great loyalty to his lordship, and best friend, Sir Jacobus.

Lady Gooddog shook her head, her eyes raised toward the ceiling. “I can’t believe how insensitive you are.”

Her son was confused. “It was just a picnic. What’s the big deal?”

“The big deal,” thundered Lord Gooddog, “is that Lumpy Space Princess was expecting you to propose.”

“Propose?” Sir Jacobus sputtered. He had been taking a large swig of apple cider, and his father’s comment caught him by such surprise that a bit of the juice sprayed out his nose. “But she’s all lumpy,” he managed to say after he’d stopped coughing.

“And space princessy,” Finn added from where he lounged in a chair, using a toothpick to pry a piece of apple skin out from between his teeth.

Lady Gooddog fixed the servant with an angry glare. “Mr. Biped, do you really think it’s appropriate for a servant to sit at the breakfast table with his master’s family? Is that what servants do?”

“I don’t know,” was Finn’s reply. “It’s what I do and I’m a servant, so yeah, I guess it kind of is.”

The lady gave a resigned sigh. “Could you at least take your feet off the table?” she asked.

“Yeah, Finn,” Sir Jacobus told him. “That’s really gross and some of us are still trying to eat.”

“Fine,” his manservant said, thumping his feet onto the floor. He reached across the table to help himself to another apple.

Turning back to her son, Lady Gooddog continued with, “Did you ever stop to think why Lumpy Space Princess went to all that trouble for your picnic?”

“Not really,” Sir Jacobus admitted as he finished his apple porridge. “I just figured she likes to do that kind of stuff.”

“I don’t think you realize how upset the princess really is,” his father told him. “She’s been on a shopping tirade since yesterday afternoon. All the shop clerks throughout the kingdom have been terrorized.” He cocked an ear toward the window. “Listen, I think I can still hear her now.”

Everyone was quiet for a moment. It wasn’t too difficult to hear the voice of Lumpy Space Princess echoing across the land. “You call that pink?” she roared. “That’s, like, totally mauve at best. How dare you try to tell me that mauve is pink! Do you know who I am?”

Then there was another voice, a frightened male voice. It was obvious that he was doing everything within his power to be conciliatory. “I am so sorry, Miss Lumpy Space. It must be the lighting in here. I sincerely thought it was pink. Let me go and fetch you a pink one from the back.”

“That’s Lumpy Space Princess to you! I am royalty!” she informed him. There was a loud bang and the sound of glass shattering.

“Oh. Is that what that is?” Sir Jacobus said, scratching his head. “I heard that when I got up this morning, but I thought the kingdom was just infested with dragons again.”

“Oh, too bad,” Finn said, looking a little disappointed. “I love fighting dragons. That would have been totally math.”

Lumpy Space Princess wasn’t finished yet. Her tirade continued. They could hear her yelling, “No, I don’t want a different size. It’s not my job to fit into your stupid clothes. It’s your job to design fashion around me.”

Sir Jacobus gave his father a penetrating look. “Are you sure that’s not dragons?”

“Yes, I’m sure,” Lord Gooddog said, getting a bit hot under his frilled collar. “Listen, Jacobus. This has got to stop. You’ve broken the heart of almost every maiden in all of Plaid. People are starting to talk. When are you going to choose a wife?”

“A wife?” Sir Jacobus said, a little shocked. “Why would I want a wife? I’m a scoundrel.”

“An untamed scoundrel,” Finn added, putting his feet back up on the table as he happily munched on the apple.

“It’s true,” the only child of Lord and Lady Gooddog said with a prideful grin. “No one can tame me.”

“Well, you listen here, Mr. Untamed Scoundrel,” Lady Gooddog said, getting to her feet and slapping Finn’s shoes off the table. “At tomorrow night’s ball, you are going to choose a bride. Do you hear me? Because if you don’t, you are going to be a very poor untamed scoundrel.” Her son was about to protest, but she cut him off. “Either you choose a bride at the ball, or your father and I will disown you and cut you off without a cent.”

“Aw, man,” Sir Jacobus said. “You guys wouldn’t do that, would you?”

“We’ve already put the wheels in motion,” Lord Gooddog said, getting to his feet to stand at his wife’s side. They faced their son as a united front. “We sent out an announcement first thing this morning, telling all eligible female guests that it is your intent to choose a bride at the ball.”

“What the zip? This really stinks,” Sir Jacobus said, crossing his arms over his broad chest. “How the heck am I supposed to do that?”

“I don’t know,” his mother told him, “but you’d better figure something out by tomorrow evening.”

“This really ducks,” Sir Jacobus grumbled as he slouched out of the dining hall with his Finn at his side. “What’s the point of being an untamed scoundrel if I’m married?”

“Yeah, dude,” Finn agreed. “You’d be, like, totally tamed.”

“Maybe I should just tell my parents that they can keep their old fortune,” Sir Jacobus said, sounding a little sulky. “I mean, I don’t really care about the money as long as I can keep living in the castle and have nice clothes and fine food and plenty of servants to do all my stuff for me.”

“Yeah,” Finn said, pursing his lips a little, “I’m pretty sure they mean you’re not going to be able to have any of that stuff, either.”

“Doggone it!” Sir Jacobus said with a huff. “Well, I don’t think I’d like being poor, so I guess I have to let somebody tame me.” He let his broad shoulders sag. “But how am I supposed to choose a bride by tomorrow night?”

“I know!” Finn said, brightening. “I have a plan that is totally amazing. It will make sure you get the coolest and most awesomest bride ever.”

“What?” the Gooddog asked, looking up eagerly. He knew his Hu-manservant and best friend wouldn’t let him down.

“We’ll hold a tournament. And the girls can compete. With, like, jousting and stuff. And whoever wins the tournament will obviously be supercool, so that’s how you’ll know who to marry,” Finn explained.

“That’s a great idea!” Sir Jacobus agreed. “I mean, not the jousting because Mom doesn’t like it when I bring horses in the castle. The last time we tried that she totally yelled. But we should definitely have a tournament.”

“Okay, cool,” Finn said with a smile. “I’ll put out an official proclamation letting the ladies know they should come to the ball ready to rumble.”

CHAPTER 2

The next evening, Sir Jacobus stood in the ballroom wearing his best kilt and his royal purple sash. His fur had been brushed until it was glossy and smooth. He was eagerly awaiting the arrival of the guests for the ball. “I wonder if any of the ladies will come dressed in armor,” he said, rubbing his paws together in anticipation. “That would be so awesome. I’m totally excited.”

“I know,” Finn agreed. His black uniform had been starched and pressed to perfection. “I can’t wait until the womenfolk start battling it out. Winner take all.”

Sir Jacobus smiled. “This is going to be awesome.” His heart began beating a little faster as he heard the first carriage pull up outside the castle door. He’d never been so keen for a ball to begin in his life.

“Princess Bubble of Gum,” a footman announced as the first guest arrived.

“That’s Bubblegum,” the princess corrected him as she made her entrance. Her pink gown was two parts perfection and one part confection; the dress was like a swirling mound of cotton candy that highlighted Princess Bubblegum’s long pink hair, which was piled in cascading curls on the top of her head. She was the ruler of the Candy Kingdom, and she looked every bit the part.

“Why are you dressed like that?” Sir Jacobus asked as he walked up to greet her.

“What do you mean?” she asked, looking down at her gown. “This is a ball, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, but I was hoping you’d at least come dressed like a ninja,” he told her, wrinkling his nose at all the pink.

“Why would I do that?” the princess wanted to know.

“Because you were supposed to come dressed for battle,” Finn interjected. “You’re not going to be able to fight very well in that.” He made a disgusted face at the delicate pink frills.

“I don’t intend to fight at all,” the princess informed them, smoothing her hands over her skirt.

“Didn’t you get Sir Jacobus’s message about how there’s going to be a tournament to see who gets to marry him?” the Hu-manservant asked, sounding surprised. “I know I delivered a note to your palace. I gave it to the Peppermint Butler. He swore he’d give it to you.”

Scoundrelous!

Note that I don't really do stars. To me a book is either worth reading or it isn't. I can't rate it three-fifths worth reading! The only reason I've relented and started putting stars up there is to credit the good ones, which were being unfairly uncredited. So, all you'll ever see from me is a five-star or a one-star (since no stars isn't a rating, unfortunately).

I rated this book WORTHY!

WARNING! MAY CONTAIN UNHIDDEN SPOILERS! PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Based on a Cartoon Network series, this is one of a pair of charming middle-grade books which were well-enough written that they entertained me, too, and I'm closer to middle-age than ever I am middle-grade! The other is Queen of Rogues. These stories are only about 130 pages each, and pretty much double-spaced, so that makes them more like 70 pages - a very fast read. I got them both from the library, but I plan on buying these for my kids to read.

I have no idea in what order these were published, and from a purely reading PoV, it really doesn't matter since they're completely self-contained and not at all chronological, but I read this one first, for no particular reason. I was more impressed with it than I was the second. Perhaps that was because I found this one to be a complete riot, whereas the other seemed slightly darker by comparison, and rather less humorous.

This one features the Untamed Scoundrel, aka Sir Jacobus Gooddog, who actually is a dog, and who has a faithful hu-manservant known as Finnish Biped, and who is more like a partner in crime than ever he is a servant. The scoundrel's parents want him to quit womanizing and gadding about, and settle down, and they've organized a ball to which all the eligible ladies of the land are invited and who have been informed that Sir Jacobus will choose a bride at this ball.

The Scoundrel and Finn decide to turn the ball into an extreme fighting arena, the winner to be the one Sir Jacobus marries, but when everyone arrives, things start going badly for The Scoundrel (the food fight doesn't help), until he spots Lady Rainicorn (who is a unicorn with rainbow skin), and who is accompanied by a woman dressed all in black, whom Finn and Sir J identify as a witch.

Before the Scoundrel can work his whiles upon the rather shy Lady Rainicorn, she and the witch have left, and Sir J and Finn chase after them, stealing a boat from the harbor so they can sail to the island where the witch is quite obviously holding Lady R as a prisoner. It's far from plain sailing however, and a rather large surprise awaits them on the island - something even a magic haggis cannot resolve.

This story had me laughing from page one, and kept me laughing all the way to the end. It's a complete riot and so off-the-wall that it had to be moved outdoors for the action to continue. I highly recommend it.

A richly embroidered, ambitious tale, Allende's latest novel charts one man's spiritual progress against five decades of history and cultural change. Allende relies less on her customary magical realism (The House of the Spirits ) than on concrete, often graphic details in her first attempt to depict North American characters and settings. Greg Reeves, the son of an itinerant preacher who claims that life is governed by an infinite plan, spends the latter part of his childhood in the L.A. barrio where his family settled when their father became ill. His best friend and soul mate there is Carmen Morales, the daughter of a hospitable Latino family. The novel follows Greg and, to a lesser extent, Carmen through turbulent experiences as each searches for identity. Greg discovers several different kinds of racial discrimination in the crowded barrio; later, he taps into the social and sexual revolution in Berkeley; and he suffers through the crucible of Vietnam, from which he emerges determined to become rich and powerful no matter the cost in morality or peace of mind. He enters into disastrous marriages with two beautiful women, both of whom, he belatedly realizes, resemble his passive, remote mother; he also fails as a father. Allende's intensely imagined prose has clarity and dimension; she describes the exotic and the mundane with equal skill. The rambling, diffuse narrative nicely mirrors the random quality of life itself: Greg discovers that "there is no infinite plan, just the strife of living." In portraying Greg as all too human and fallible, however, Allende risks making him an unsympathetic character. This novel by renowned Chilean author Allende ( House of Spirits , LJ 4/15/85) is the story of Gregory Reeves's journey from childhood to middle age and long-sought peace and happiness. Gregory's journey is marked by the contending philosophies of his mother's Bahai faith; his father's personally revealed, metaphysical explanation of the universe, called "The Infinite Plan" (the selling of which provides the family's income); and the traditional Catholicism and sense of nostalgia that permeate the Latin barrio where Gregory lives as a child. Though the book is not provocative and the plot is somewhat predictable, it is held together by a deep interest in the colorful, enchanting characters and their evolving relationships to one another. The first North America-set novel by Allende (The Stories of Eva Luna, 1991, etc.) begins with a beguiling freshness that rapidly degenerates into boring leftist commentary-cum-melodrama-- in a plot that goes on and on until it mercifully fizzles out in platitudes. Long-troubled Gregory Reeves, who's never been able to regain the security of his early childhood (cutely recalled now in the form of a confession to a novelist), is the son of Charles Reeves, the ``Doctor of Sciences,'' who travels around the country in a brightly decorated truck--along with wife Nora, a Jewish refugee; helper Olga, a Russian; daughter Julia and son Gregory--revealing the secret of life: The Infinite Plan he's discovered. This idyll ends when Charles becomes ill, and the family moves into the L.A. barrio home of Pedro Morales, a Chicano follower of ``The Plan.'' When the father recovers, they move to a run-down cottage--but for the rest of Gregory's life, the Morales family, especially daughter Carmen, will be an anchor for Gregory. Reality soon begins ``irreparably to deteriorate,'' and though a friendly librarian leaves him money to go to Berkeley, ambitious and hard-working Gregory is unhappy. He graduates from law school; serves in Vietnam; moves to San Francisco; makes two disastrous marriages; fathers two troubled children; and earns and loses a great deal of money. Meanwhile, the decades whirl by as ``revolution in the streets [is] replaced by the plague of conformism'' and characters in equally extravagant subplots finally enjoy their own happy endings. Only Gregory has to wait for the novelist to save him, assuring Gregory ``that everyone carries a plan inside, but it's a faded map that's hard to read and that's why we wander round so and sometimes get lost.'' Potentially original characters, denied their own voices as the writer does the telling, are ultimately overwhelmed by sentimental and overwrought gush. Better in final execution than others, if not content

There I am devouring Allende like a large meal, going from book to book, thought to thought, era to era without any regard to continuity or subject. I almost left The Infinite Plan for last but it was next on the pile so I picked it up and as weird as this sounds, enjoyed it more so than all the other novels that kept going on and on in their spinnings through history and drama and characters and relationships.
Gregory is a real protagonist, I wasn�t even sure if I liked him though I knew for sure that he didn�t even like himself. He seems to meander through life with aims that are less focused than an Allende plot. But this time the meandering works, the sense of simply walking with a character and them telling you there life is really used to its fullest here. Again m review is as a comparison to other Allende books and yet this style, the masculine voice/perception really seemed to come across. What I particularly found provocative, worth the price of admission, if you will was the root of Gregory�s problems, essentially accepting the company of unhealthy, needy people in his life. He even has an associate in the law firm he owns who regularly tries to commit suicide in the bathroom. Thinking about the characters and their spiraling lives made me think that there is a marked ear for humor, a comedy lost within Allende�s work. It all becomes this heavy historical missive and borders sometimes on a historical romance novel that is laborious and in love with it�s own language. To read her in Spanish must be a real treat, an added attraction to her work because I can see how the crossing of historical tapestry can become tiresome.
This time though, she strikes the mark in the final analysis of a character and his problems. Not perfect but it comes closer than the others do in fully executing a character. I agree with a previous reviewer that the Vietnam scenes are a little awkward but the awkwardness now strikes me as waiting to be funny, hilarious even but Allende�s characters tend to be so somber that their laughter is suspect or predatory for something that is about to bring more sorrow.
I don�t recommend this at full price nor do I suggest it as the only Allende novel to be read but it is a nice distraction from her main body of Latin American historical/romance work. It comes as a pleasant off-shoot to the present world and a strong experiment in a writer changing from a feminine focus to masculine.

Isabel will tell you yourself...

Isabel would be able to tell every story, to put a reason in the life of every person. In reading the life of Gregory Reeves, I had the impression that the dreams, hopes and hidden reasons of my life were becoming clear to myself. Reading her books is like telling her your story, and waiting for her to give it a reason and, at the same time, to put poetry in it, to make it worth to be told.
In her narration, also the feelings, the pains, the irrational of an existence are put in a rational light. But nonetheless her writing does not loose the poetry of the irrational that she shares with other South-American writers, like Marquez or Amado.
I'd say that the secret of her books is really this merging of rational and irrational, the sense and order of feelings and the mysterious poetry of what seems rational.

Allende's weakest offering

Usually when I read a book by Isabelle Allende I am mesmerized and eagerly turning pages waiting for another revelation. In this book I was just bored and disappointed.
The main character is the child of a minister whose "Infinite Plan" sounds more like New Age speculation than revival preaching. He is raised in the Barrio where almost every character confirms to the whole Latin Men are sexy but sexist stereotype and when he grows up to be a lawyer, he's a complete creep.
I can see that Allende's purpose is to take a likeable character, transform him into a jerk (as he warns you on about page 100 or so) and then slowly bring him back to humanity (there is one line about how he thought he was moving in circles but he was actually moving in spirals - I still remember that one.) but by the time he gets to his resolution, you still don't like him that much. He's been such a self-absorbed yuppie that you want to smack him upside the head a few more times.
The rest of the characters are either awful or poorly drawn charactitures. There is the daughter who becomes a drug addict (and the main character realizes that its not his fault that his kid is such a screwup but then again, it kinda is his fault) and there's his best friend from the Barrio who has some strength and you really wish that she was in another book and not hanging out with these losers. There's the father who's mysterious and the sister that's constantly angry. There's also te best friend that is loud and abrasive.
Now, this is still an Isabelle Allende book and as an Isabelle Allende book it has some great emotional highs and lows and some memorable scenes. It just isn't as sustained as her masterworks like House of Spirits or Eva Luna.
A common complaint among women readers is that men who try to write women characters usually get them wrong. They are either window dressing or so obviously stereotypical as to be surreal. This book seems to be Allende's attempt to write a book from the male perspective. It's a failure, but it's an interesting failure. A better portrayal of the emotional lives of men would either be Fight CLub or High Fidelity (either the movies or the books are great)
